Sthamba, in Nepali, simply means a column. A column as in a pillar or a standing upright pole, a religiously significant pillar like structure (Shiva sthamba), a pillar built in memory of something or someone (Ashok sthamba, Bhimsen sthamba=dharahara), or even a column in a newspaper. The image here, popularly known as dharahara, is also called "Bhimsen sthamba." The legend has it Bhimsen Thapa jumped off this tower with a cane and an umbrella.
